Closing Blank Spots and Illuminating Blind Spots in Research on Emerging Contaminants: The Source–Pathway–Receptor–Impact–Mitigation (SPRIM) Continuum as an Organizing Framework

چکیده

Emerging contaminants (ECs) include: (1) high-technology rare earth elements, (2) nanomaterials, (3) antibiotic/antimicrobial resistance, (4) microplastics, and (5) synthetic organic chemicals, which are currently unregulated. ECs continue to attract considerable research public attention due their potential human ecological health risks. However, an organizing conceptual framework for framing on is missing. Lacking a framework, only few aspects frequently well-studied (i.e., bandwagon/Matthew effect), while other equally important topics receive cursory attention. In this Editorial perspective, the Source–Pathway–Receptor–Impact–Mitigation (SPRIM) continuum proposed as guide ECs. First, description of SPRIM its components presented. Bubbles, Blind-Spots and Brexit

In this paper we develop a well-established financial model to investigate whether bubbles were present in opinion polls and betting markets prior to the UK’s vote on EU membership on 23 June 2016. The importance of our contribution is threefold. Firstly, our continuous-time model allows for irregularly spaced time series—a common feature of polling data. Secondly, we build on qualitative compa...

Blind spots in ecosystem services research and implementation

Ecosystem service research has gained attraction, and the topic is also high on the policy agenda. Projects such as TEEB have generalized results of individual case studies to provide guidelines for policy makers and stakeholders. Seppelt et al. (2011) raised critical questions about four facets that characterize the holistic ideal of ecosystem services research: (i) biophysical realism of ecos...

Percolation and blind spots in complex networks.

Recent works on network security have focused on whether a complex network can maintain its integrability under attack or random node failures. In applications of increasing importance such as sensor networks, a somewhat different problem, namely, the occurrence of isolated nodes (or blind spots), is of great interest. We show that, for networks with a stronger ability to form global spanning c...
